Wednesday 15th November 2006
Well, what a miserable day it was today!
It has been absolutely bucketing it down with rain all day and there
doesn't seem to be any sign of it letting up. I had planned to do a much
longer walk up on the high fells today, but I knew that wasn't going to
be possible when I set off. I opted to do something a bit lower instead
and in an unashamed fit of peak (pique?!) bagging, I headed to the northern
extremities for a couple of lesser fells on the 'to do' list. The first
was Binsey, one that I've climbed before as it is a Wainwright top. The
mud on there put paid to Angus and Casper's new hairdo and of course we
couldn't see a thing from the top.
The second walk we did was up to the
northernmost of all the Birkett fells, Green How on Aughertree Fell.
This was a simple walk from the road, but we still managed to get sodden
up there and it's not always easy finding an unmarked top such as this
in the mist. This must have been the least amount of ascent required to
reach any fell top - a mere 20m. As a point of interest, Eric Robson - writer, broadcaster
and chairman of Cumbria Tourism - passed us in his car on Aughertree
Fell - though I guess he didn't recognise us!
The third walk was to Aiken Knott from
Rigg Beck, just to have a look and see what the beck was like in those
conditions.
Three damp walks in a day - the photos
are nothing to write home about, I ended up using the second reserve camera today
as it was so wet; a sort of quick-on-the-draw, point and shoot escapade! Take them merely as a record that we were there!
